Today’s post is a guest post from my friend Stacey Myers. She’s come out with a fabulous new book called Build Your List with 30 Daily Doables. In order to get the word out about this valuable list-building resource, Stacey is going on a blog tour, where she shares one doable item per day on a different blog. Today, it’s our turn here at New VA Advice, and I’m excited to have her!

Doable 14 – Delivering Your Free Gift
How you deliver your free gift is going to depend on what other things you have set up and what the free gift is. If it is a PDF or something similar you can either upload it to your WordPress site, if you have one, or simply add it as an attachment to your follow up email.
If you have a WordPress website it is really easy to upload your file.
It is fine to upload a few things to your website. You can also host it somewhere else like Amazon S3, where you can host podcasts, videos, and other files. Mostly you will pay for the amount of space you are using on your website and if you upload a lot of things to it then you will end up paying for space that you don’t need to be using.
Whether you upload it to your site, your ftp, or other option, you will receive a link that takes people straight to the document. It is this link that you share in your email. You could also put the link on the thank you page that people go straight to after they opt in (if you have one specifically for that free gift).
The link is going to be long and ugly so you might want to shorten the link with a link shortener like bit.ly. If you haven’t used bit.ly before – copy the long link, go to bit.ly and paste it into the bar at the top. Bit.ly will then shorten the link for you. I personally use a plugin called Pretty Links – there is a free and premium version. What I like about Pretty Links is you can create links that start with your URL.
If you have videos and other resources you can do what you will see done with this book. Visit the Resource Page to have a look. People opt in and then are sent a link to a page on my website that I have password protected. In the first follow up email they receive I will share the password with them. On that page you will also see that I have embedded video into the page. I upload it to either Vimeo or YouTube, copy the embed code and paste it into my website. Similarly, for my membership site, I upload it to Amazon S3 and then it plays on a page.
If it is an email course you would have it set up as an autoresponder (follow up) series so the emails automatically go out after they have signed up (more on this in an upcoming doable).
